This proposal won a competition with the objective of expanding and reorganizing the buildings of the Waldorf Aravaca School. It is based on the intention of preserving the atmosphere of magic, tranquility and peaceful nature that currently treasures the facilities of the current facilities.
To this end, all decisions have been explored and analyzed from the double standard of the functional-tangible on the one hand and the sensory-intangible on the other, maintaining consistency at all times with Waldorf pedagogy.
The project responds to the growth needs of the school by raising up one floor and converting the new classrooms into “Treehouses”, thus freeing up playground area on the ground floor. The new classrooms also occupy the space between the two existing primary/secondary buildings in order to compact the existing building.
Due to the short period of execution, the school holidays, an “Off-Site” construction of solid wooden panels, prepared in the factory and assembled on site, is proposed. The wood is only visible inside the classrooms. The exterior face is insulated with wood fiber panels, finished with a colored plaster.
This implementation creates a new relationship between the classrooms and nature, enjoying the trees from within. The organic layout of the new construction allows to surround, respect and integrate the existing trees.
Finally, the new building establishes a formal and volumetric dialogue with the original brick house by developing parallel to it and on two levels with sloping roofs. It dialogues and at the same time differentiates itself creating diversity. Starting more compact next to Building 3, it dissolves towards the tree houses as if it were a living organism.
La propuesta, ganadora de un concurso, nace no solamente del objetivo de ampliar y reorganizar las edificaciones de la actual escuela, sino también de la intención de preservar la atmósfera de magia, tranquilidad y naturaleza apacible que actualmente atesoran las instalaciones del Colegio Waldorf Aravaca.
Con este fin, todas las decisiones han sido exploradas y analizadas desde el doble rasero de lo funcional-tangible por un lado y de lo sensorial-intangible por el otro, manteniendo la coherencia en todo momento con la pedagogía Waldorf.
El proyecto responde a las necesidades de crecimiento del colegio elevándose una planta y convirtiendo las nuevas aulas en “Casitas en el Árbol”, liberando así superficie de jardín en planta baja para juego y deporte. Las nuevas clases también ocupan el espacio entre los dos edificios existentes de primaria/secundaria con el fin de compactar la edificación y liberar suelo.
Debido al corto plazo de ejecución, las vacaciones escolares, se propone una construcción “Off-Site” de paneles contraminados de madera, preparados a medida en fábrica y ensamblados en obra. La madera queda vista solamente en el interior de las aulas. La cara exterior se aísla con paneles de fibra de madera, acabado con un enfoscado coloreado.
Esta implantación crea una nueva relación de algunas de las aulas con la naturaleza disfrutándola desde lo alto. La disposición orgánica de la nueva construcción permite rodear, respetar e integrar los árboles existentes.
Finalmente, el nuevo edificio establece un diálogo formal y volumétrico con la casa originaria de ladrillo al desarrollarse en paralelo a ésta y en dos niveles con cubiertas inclinadas. Dialoga y a la vez se diferencia creando diversidad, siendo más compacto junto al Edificio 3 y disolviéndose hacia las casas en los árboles como si fuera un organismo vivo.
Dieses Projekt, das den Wettbewerb zur Erweiterung der Waldorf Schule Aravaca gewann, bewahrt die Magie, Ruhe und friedlicher Atmosphäre, die das Schulgelände auszeichnen. Um sparsam mit dem Grundstück umzugehen und gleichzeitig das Bestandsgebäude zu verdichten, wird der Freiraum zwischen den zweigeschosseigenen Baukörpern im EG für Klassenräume und im OG für einen Tanz- und Musiksaal mit Oberlicht genutzt.
Von dort aus entwickeln sich die neuen Klassenräume, gleich Baumhäusern, um eine Etage vom Schulhof abgehoben. Es entsteht eine neue Beziehung zwischen den Klassenzimmern und der Natur, die jetzt aus den Baumkronen heraus erlebbar ist. Der organische Grundriss des Neubaus ermöglicht es, den bestehenden Baumbestand zu umgeben, zu respektieren und zu integrieren. Da drunter entsteht im Erdgeschoss eine überdachte Spiel- und Pausenfläche.
Aufgrund des knappen Ausführungszeitraumes, den Sommerschulferien, wird ein „Off-Site“ Tragwerk aus massiven Brettschichtholzplatten, die im Werk auf Maß vorgefertigt und vor Ort montiert werden, verwendet. Das Holz ist nur in den Klassenzimmern sichtbar. Die Außenhaut ist mit Holzfaserplatten gedämmt und mit einem farbigen Putz veredelt.
Schließlich tritt der Neubau in einen formalen und volumetrischen Dialog mit dem ursprünglichen Backsteinhaus, indem er sich parallel dazu und auf zwei Ebenen mit geneigten Dächern entwickelt. Es tritt in Dialog und differenziert sich gleichzeitig und erschafft Vielfalt. Kompakt beginnend am Bestandsgebäude, löst es sich zu den Baumhäusern hin auf, als wäre es ein lebendiger Organismus.
